Why Can't People Tickle Themselves?
Tickling excites the fine nerve endingd beneath the surface of the skin. It makes some people laugh, while others recoil from the touch.
How ticklish a tickle feels can depend on who's doing the tickling! Recent studies have shown a difference between brain scans of people being tickled by another person, compared to when they tickle themselves. In the case of self-tickling it seems that your brain see it coming and tells you to ignore it. Brain scans of self-ticklers show that the cellbellum, a part of the brain used to planning, send urgent messages to another part of the brain warning it that a sensation is on the way.
However, we ave to have control over it thsi sensation; for example, life would be impossible if the soles of our feet tickled every time we put them to the ground. So the brain deals with this and sorts out the important stimuli from the ones which don't matter very much.
Darwn the evolutionist was intersted in the phenomenon of tickles. He realized that a victim of tickling would squirm in order to get vulnerable parts of the body away from the stimulus. He thought this was an evolutionary mechanism to protect us against predators. Interestingly, the pleasure from being tickled increases the older you become.
