Can Cows Walk Down Stairs?
I just gotten this book on Saturday & it's very interesting on the side it says, perplexing questions answered. i came across this question & want to share it wif u guys. This is from the book.
Is there anybody else out there?
If you mean intelligent life, probably not. There's certainly no evidence. However, any astronomer would have to be very brave to say that the Earth was the only life-bearing planet in the universe, and there are plenty of people who'd argue that intelligent life is thinly scattered in our own galaxy.
So, if we are talking about life which is similar to ours, what does it need in order to exist? For a start, it needs a long period of stability to evolve beyond microbes into complex animals and plants. So the first requirement would have to be a stable sun. This immediately rules out 90 per cent of the galaxy's 200 billion stars - they are either too cold and feeble, or too hot and short-lived.
Another essential for life is the presence of liquid - most likely water, which must be in liquid state in which molecules can mix because in order to form complex molecules, chemicals need to be able to mix together well. This puts an even tighter limit on the requirements for life, for although water molecules are widespread throughspread throughout the universe, water is only liquid in a narrow range of temperatures and pressures (0-100˚
C under Earth's atmospheric pressure). So for liquid water to survive on a planet, it would need a substantial atmosphere, and a stable orbit around its star at roughly the same distance as the Earth. This is why there is no life on Mars or Venus - they are either too hot or too cold.
Those two requirements alone rule out any other solar systems we know about, but bear in mind that smaller systems are hard to detect and might well be out there. As far as we can tell, Earth is a unique planet, in a perfect position for our kind of life to flourish. The chance of there being anywhere similar must be very small indeed.
I tot this is very interesting... Hard to argue that God didn't plan to flourish us....
